If you were out and about near Lake Ginninderra on Saturday the 13th of May, you may have seen more walkers than usual perambulating along the pathway. The inaugural Step Up for Volunteering Walk was blessed with a clear Canberran autumnal day, perfect weather for the 7k walk around the shores of Lake Ginninderra. This event celebrated the important role that volunteering plays within our community, as part of National Volunteers Week.
Walkers had the opportunity to chat with local organisations about volunteering. Belconnen Community Service, Volunteering and Contact ACT, St John Ambulance, Northside Community Service, Carers ACT, SHINE for Kids, Belconnen Community Council, Belconnen Arts Centre, and the Aids Action Council, all hosted stalls on the route around the lake.
Walkers left a trail of positive chalk messages along the path, and collected stamps for their walker passports as they went. Completed passports went into a prize draw, with prizes generously donated by SG Fleet, BWS, Bill Caddey, and Walking and Cycling Canberra. A highlight of the day was Victor the Viking, who completed the walk while making the day of many Raiders’ fans. Walkers wrapped up the day with a sausage sizzle provided by Majura Mens Shed. You can check out photographs from the day below.
