Meet Debbie from the Commonwealth Home and Support Program

There are a lot of people working at Belconnen Community Service (BCS) who make up the incredible team we have today. We recently caught up with Commonwealth Home and Support Program coordinator Debbie Moger, who has been with BCS for well over a decade!

How long have you been working at BCS?

I’ve been at BCS for 16 years, so quite some time. I started off in homelessness prevention in an administrative role which I kind of fell into. From there I went on to work in disability because someone said ‘would you like to go into groups and stuff’. It had never really crossed my mind. I had completed a diploma in community work, so disability was never really on my list, but I stayed for nine years. I worked with groups for around 18 months, and then that wound up due to lack of funding so I moved across to transport, and then the opportunity came up in LAC which is Local Area Coordination and I worked in that area for about nine years and then that ceased when the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) was rolled out. I then had no idea what I wanted to do so BCS asked me if I was interested in working in Aged Care, so I ended up there. It has now been four years. I think if you are a people person it doesn’t really matter who you are working with. It’s been really great.

You’ve worn a lot of hats at BCS. What do you do now?

I work with people over 65 years old in CHSP which is the Commonwealth Home Support Program for people over 65 years old. It’s a low level entry into aged care. Our work is in-home care so personal care, domestic assistance, gardening, shopping assistance, social assistance and just to  help keep people at home for as long as possible is the main aim. The next stage after that is people going on to packages where they may need a little more support, depending on what level. There are four different levels. One and twos being that CHSP base level, threes and fours needing more assistance with the level fours being more intense care which could be because of medical conditions. Now with the home care packages being a huge thing now, it’s a business model now so that’s been a massive learning curve. It’s been a long process to even get that.

With the Aged Care Packages that’s more based around case management and working out someone’s support needs and working with them, taking on the role as their doer, doing all those odds and ends. A lot of our support workers, who see the people a lot are able to monitor their needs and tell me how effective everything is. We can get doctors in and OT’s to see what can help them to stay in their own homes. They might need a walker to help them move around the house, so we purchase the mobility items they might want. In the end everything is up to the individual, and what they want and we help support them.

You’ve been at BCS for a long time. What do you enjoy about working here?

I love BCS. All the managers, all the people I work with have been absolutely fantastic, I’ve never had an issue, and it’s just great. Unless I had to leave because there was no job I wouldn’t. You see people leaving jobs and I’ve been so lucky to be able to stay. That’s one thing about community work, you’re able to move around, and if you’re a people person you can move around into a lot of different jobs. It’s something different every day because we have over 300 participants at CHSP so you’re talking to lots of different people. The workers are awesome as well, it’s nice to have a good team – all my teams have been fabulous. I don’t think there’s ever been a day that I just haven’t wanted to come to work because I don’t like it.

What did you do before coming to BCS?

Before BCS I was studying, doing my community work diploma and working part time in a podiatrist reception. That’s how I got the job originally doing admin at BCS. One of the girls I was doing the diploma with told me they were looking for an admin assistant, and it would be a good chance to get my foot in the door. 16 years later I’m still here. I never had any set course while studying, so I was just lucky enough that people saw something in me and asked if I would like to give something a go. When you know your managers well, if they approach me and think I can do something I’m willing to give it a whirl. Everyone has always been really supportive. I like my job, I like coming to work. My team is fabulous, I cannot fault them. I often say if I were to win the lottery I would probably still come to work.
