Step Up for Volunteering
May 20 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Belconnen Community Service is stepping out and stepping up to celebrate volunteers in the lead up to National Volunteers Week. We invite everyone to join us in taking a walk around Lake Ginninderra to show support for volunteers in our community. Enjoy the last colours of autumn and celebrate people who donate their time to make our community a happier, healthier place to live.
Local community organisations will be set up on the route around the lake, ready to chat about volunteering opportunities. It is rumoured that Victor the Viking will also make an appearance! Stalls include Volunteering and Contact ACT; SHINE for Kids, Molonglo Rural Fire Service. Make sure to stop in at the BCS Stall and enjoy a sausage sizzle!
BCS began as a volunteer run organisation in the early 1970s and volunteers are still crucial to the organisation today. BCS Community Transport volunteers drive around 10,000 kilometres a month. Some of them have been driving on their own time for over ten years. Their work helps people to attend vital medical appointments and also to get out of the house and connect socially. Volunteers also run BCS’s English Conversation Group, help out with social support groups, and write stories for web site and newsletters.
Community Transport Manager and Step Up organiser, Graham McKerchar says, “It’s not just about our volunteers. It’s about the mums and dads down the oval on the weekends, volunteers in school cafes and doing bread runs, SES volunteers and more. It’s about community coming together to celebrate the volunteering that happens in our community every day.”
