Belconnen Community Gallery ‘Piece of Mind’ series presents:

People of the World

A celebration of diversity and friendship for International Day of People with a Disability

20 November – 7 December with an opening celebration 1:00pm Tuesday 27 November

Belconnen Community Gallery, Belconnen Community Centre, Swanson Crt Belconnen

Open Mon-Fri 9am -5pm

The participants of the Belconnen Community Service ‘My Art’ program are a group of friends who come together to make art at the Belconnen Community Centre.  They use various materials in diverse ways to create their individual parts of large group collaborations. The group works together on big projects then has a big party to celebrate their creative achievements.

When the group began they were greeted with the choice of whether they wanted to be party artists or work in a more contemplative setting. Participants each made their choice and the group now works out of two different spaces, one quiet and peaceful, and the other with party music chosen by the group’s resident DJ Cal; who according to Art Therapist Su Hanfling “has an encyclopaedic knowledge of music”.

The exhibition title and theme were chosen by the group, who wanted their work to reflect and celebrate the diverse range of talents and stories of those within the group, the wider community, and indeed the world. Various types of artworks will address the theme ‘People of the World’ in a range of ways. One collaboration explores the diversity of what people look like through portraiture, while another explores how they dance through body tracings of dance poses that will come together to form an artistic mosh pit!
