As much as we might enjoy it, spending time tending to our gardens may not always be the easiest thing to do. Maintaining areas external to our homes are often a huge challenge. As well as time limitations and maybe a bit of lack of motivation, not everyone is able to physically manage lawn mowers and other power tools, and some people don’t have the strength to take care of regular weeding and pruning. When a garden becomes overgrown it can become overwhelming and might feel like an impossible task. Professional gardening services are often too expensive for many household budgets. This can lead to stress, safety hazards and other risks.
This is why Belconnen Community Service (BCS) originally commenced the “10/10 Project”.
BCS recognised that tackling overgrown gardens is an unmet need in our community. The concept is simple. For one day every spring, 10 teams of volunteers tackle 10 gardens in the Belconnen area. This year BCS is holding the project on Friday 18 October. If you’d like your garden to be considered, please download the registration form below. We prioritise applications which meet the following criteria:
The householders are not the only ones who benefit from the 10/10 project. The opportunity to spend a day working hard with other volunteers helps bring people together and helps them to feel proud of the work they can accomplish. 10/10 volunteers come from BCS and sponsors such as Housing ACT, Spotless and Westpac as well as community members. If you or anyone you know would also like to be a sponsor please call us on 02 6264 0200.
If you don’t have a garden you would like to register, but would like to help out on the day, you can register as a volunteer by downloading the form below.
