Step up for Volunteering

13 April 2017

On Saturday May 13, many of Canberra’s volunteer organisations will host stalls on the shores of Lake Ginninderra.  Everyone’s invited to take a walk around the lake to show support for Canberra volunteers.  On the way, walkers can find out more about ways to volunteer in our community.  Step up for Volunteering is an event organised by Belconnen Community Service (BCS) for National Volunteers Week.

BCS began as a volunteer run organisation in the early 1970s and volunteers are still crucial to the organisation today.  BCS Community Transport volunteers drive around 10,000 kilometres a month.  Some of them have been driving on their own time for over ten years.  Their work helps people to attend vital medical appointments and also to get out of the house and connect socially.  Volunteers also run BCS’s English Conversation Group, help with art and drama programs and write stories for web site and newsletters.

Community Transport Manager Graham McKerchar says, “It’s not just about our volunteers. It’s about the mums and dads down the oval on the weekends, volunteers in school cafes and doing bread runs, SES volunteers and more.  It’s about community coming together to celebrate the volunteering that happens in our community every day.”

Graham is passionate about both volunteering and walking; Step up for Volunteering combines the two.  Other organisations are showing their support for the idea.  Volunteering and Contact ACT, St John Ambulance, Northside Community Service and Carers ACT are just a few of the organisations who’ll be setting up their stalls around the lake.  No celebration of volunteers would be complete without a sausage sizzle!  You can buy a sausage sanga and support a worthy cause  on the day.

Join the Walk

Come on down to Mc Dermott Place at Lake Ginninderra between 10:30am and 1:30pm on Saturday May 13.  Enjoy the last colours of autumn and celebrate people who donate their time to make our community a happier, healthier place to live.

Host a Stall
