Local area coordinators aim to make disability services and support more:
- Personal
- Local
- Accountable
- And supports people with disabilities and their families in their local communities.
Local Area Coordination will promote:
- Focus on a meaningful life and family leadership
- Emphasis on strengthening community capacity and less on funding
- Greater emphasis on the principles of planning for the future especially at times of transition, importance of personal networks and community connections
- Complement the role of other services and partnerships
- Work with local communities to support inclusion and the valued contribution of people with disabilities
Eligibility for the program
A person must have a physical, intellectual, cognitive and/or sensory disability and require sustained assistance and be between the ages of birth to 65 years at the time they request support. People may access medium - to long-term support of Local Area Coordination to ensure that plans and goals are achieved. Services are available for people living in the Gungahlin, Belconnen, Woden Valley, Weston Creek and Tuggeranong areas. Individuals in other areas may access short-term support in the form of information, advocacy and/or advice.
